ITU-UNESCO/IOC-WMO Joint Task Force

Under the secretariat support of ITU, this Joint Task Force investigates the potential of using submarine telecommunications cables for ocean and climate monitoring and disaster warning. The Task Force aims at developing a strategy and roadmap that could lead to enabling the availability of submarine repeaters equipped with scientific sensors for climate monitoring and disaster risk reduction. It will also analyze the potential renovation and relocation of retired out-of-service cables in this realm.

Global e-sustainability initiative (GeSI)

The Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) is a leading source of impartial information, resources and best practices for achieving integrated social and environmental sustainability through Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The initiative draws on the collaboration with members from major ICT companies and organisations around the globe, as well as an alliance with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and ITU.

Solving the E-Waste Problem (StEP)

As a member of the Solve the E-Waste Problem Initiative (StEP), ITU works in close collaboration with companies, NGO's, academic institutions and other International Organizations, including the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Secretariat of the Basel Convention (SBC), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the United Nations University (UNU).

​StEP's work is founded on scientific assessments and incorporates a comprehensive view of the social, environmental and economic aspects of e-waste. This initiative conducts research on the entire life cycle of electrical and electronic equipment and their corresponding global supply, process and material flows. It seeks to foster safe, eco- and energy-efficient re-use and recycling practices around the globe in a socially responsible manner.

Joint Survey on e-waste (ITU, SBC, UNEP, UNU, CEDARE and StEP)

The ​Joint Survey on E-Waste, which ITU is conducting in collaboration with key partner organizations, aims at collecting detailed data on e-waste management, policies and standards as well as constructing a comprehensive overview of the current e-waste landscape and identifying future challenges in this realm. Such a mapping will establish a base upon which the exchange of e-waste information and best practices can occur, and will form a valuable tool in promoting collaborative work in the future.
