The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) together with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute – Industry Specification Group -Fifth Generation Fixed Network (ETSI ISG F5G), the Broadband Forum (BBF), and the China Communications Standards Association – Technical Committee 6 (CCSA TC6) is organizing the Fifth Joint ETSI ISG F5G, BBF, CCSA TC6 and ITU-T SG15 Workshop on "FTTR" (Fibre to the room) at the ITU headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, on 22 October 2025 from 14h00-18h00 CEST. Remote participation will be provided for the workshop.
This workshop focuses on the evolution of fibre in-premises networks as a key enabler of high Quality of Experience (QoE) for modern digital services such as real-time conferencing, cloud computing, ultra-high-definition video, and immersive AR/VR applications. It covers the transition from legacy copper-based systems to fibre infrastructure, the integration of fibre with advanced wireless technologies, and the application of AI in network management and service delivery. The scope also includes the review of recent standardization efforts by ITU-T, ETSI, CCSA, and BBF, highlighting the importance of global coordination to support large-scale, interoperable deployments.
The primary goal of this workshop is to foster collaboration and innovation in the development and deployment of fibre in-premises networks. It aims to explore new applications and requirements, share successful deployment practices, and examine the integration of smart home technologies. The workshop also seeks to advance the convergence of fibre and wireless systems, including coordination with Wi-Fi, millimetre-wave, and Li-Fi technologies. Additionally, it will address the role of artificial intelligence in enhancing network performance and enabling new services, while encouraging alignment among global standards organizations to ensure unified product functionality and performance expectations.
Participation in the workshop is open to all regular participants of ETSI ISG F5G, BBF, CCSA TC6 and ITU-T SG15 meetings and to any individual interested in the topic who wishes to contribute to the work. Participation is free of charge.
