BDT Director Doreen Bogdan-Martin participated in ITU's Global Symposium for Regulators 2021 (GSR-21), from 21-25 June.
This year's GSR featured the theme “Regulation for Digital Transformation: Accelerating Inclusive Connectivity, Access and Use.''
At the outset, Ms Bogdan-Martin noted that the ''role of the 'new generation' regulator is evolving into what we might call an 'architect of fit-for-purpose, collaborative regulation', helping shape and optimize the functioning of the digital markets that are now so vital to every segment of our economies, and our societies.''
Regulators adopted Best Practice Guidelines on ''Regulatory uplift for financing digital infrastructure, access and use''. Ms Bogdan-Martin told them, ''With digital now vital to the continuity and growth of every economic sector, we count on you to steer a safe and steady course through highly unpredictable terrain.''
After weeks of regional meetings, GSR-21 at the global level comprised of various thematic meetings, a Heads of Regulators Executive Roundtable, an Industry Advisory Group for Development Issues and Private Sector Chief Regulatory Officer's Meeting (IAGDI-CRO) , a Regulatory Associations Meeting, and a Road to Addis series event focused on ''Leadership.''
It was also the first GSR to host a Network of Women for WTDC meeting and Generation Connect meeting, in effort to enhance diversity in the ICT ecosystem.
Ms Bogdan-Martin observed that ''collaboration'' was the word of the week. She expressed her firm belief that together, through the power of collaboration and partnership, we can make the dream to connect the 3.7 billion that remain unconnected a reality for all.
