20th Session of the UN High-Level Committee on South-South Cooperation

BDT Director Doreen Bogdan-Martin delivered a statement to the 20th Session of the UN High-Level Committee on South-South Cooperation.

She described how digital platforms and services have become absolutely critical throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and emphasized that almost half the world's population lack access to such necessary digital connectivity. Most of those who remain unconnected are located in the global south.

Stating that this is a tragic missed opportunity, Ms Bogdan-Martin explained that it is ''in the world's most disadvantaged communities, that digital can have its most powerful transformational effect. Universal digital connectivity is the vital catalyst that can dramatically change the global development picture and propel us forward in our efforts to reach our 17 SDGs.''

She urged the international community to place affordable broadband for all as a top priority.
