Workshop on green ICT and emerging technologies towards climate change mitigation

Time and place: Monday, 29 May 2023, 14:30 – 16:20 hours (Room C2)
This workshop on green ICT and emerging technologies towards climate change mitigation will take place at ITU Headquarters (ITU Tower building, Room C2) in Geneva, Switzerland on Monday, 29 May 2023, 14:30 – 16:20 hours, following the ITU-D Study Group 2 Question 6/2 meeting dedicated to “ICTs for the environment”.

Background information

Emerging technologies can support countries and communities adapt to climate change by lowering risk and effects posed by the consequences of climate change. As more people become connected online, data traffic continues to increase and the demand for data centers and other energy-intensive ICT equipment grows in parallel, as well as consumer demand for digital devices. This results in a growing carbon and waste footprint from our digital society. Emerging technologies can support climate monitoring, helping us understand and interpret recent changes and forecast future predictions. By harnessing technologies appropriately, the digital revolution can be steered to combat climate change and advance global sustainability, environmental stewardship, and human well-being.
Governmental purchasing can be a significant incentive for ICT suppliers to innovate and adapt their products to become greener. Building on existing recommendations from the international community, as mandated by the WTDC Resolution 66 (Rev. Kigali, 2022) and the WSIS Action Line C7 e-environment, targeted towards purchasers of hard and software in or for ICT ministries and regulators is vital. By following climate-sound criteria in procurement decisions, government-run ICT projects can significantly decrease their carbon footprint. There has to be more efforts to make climate-friendliness a key consideration in ICT’s architecture design.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together actors from the sectors involved in the development of emerging technologies and green ICT policies in the context of climate action.
