WEEE Policy Support for Dominican Republic

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), in collaboration with the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (INDOTEL) and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARENA), is currently supporting the Government in developing a dedicated Regulation on E-waste Management and Final Disposal.

A series of national consultations have been held in 2021, including both public and private sector, in order to define clear roles, duties and responsibilities of national stakeholders involved in the e-waste value chain. A draft of the e-waste Regulation has been developed, following the feedback received during the public consultations, and then presented and discussed with key electrical and electronic equipment producers in the country.
Through the latest collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the final draft of the e-waste regulation has been finalized and validate in May 2022 during an event hosted by INDOTEL in Santo Domingo.

The objective of the ongoing joint effort of ITU, UNEP, INDOTEL and MARENA is to finalize the approval process at ministerial level of the e-waste regulation and conduct a national awareness campaign to sensitize consumers on the issue of e-waste and the Government effort to implement sound management of e-waste in Dominican Republic.
