Global engagement

ITU seminars, workshops and assistance – a global engine for knowledge building and transfer of world-class expertise

Each of the three ITU Sectors reaches out to, and works with, countries, communities and constituencies around the world to build invaluable knowledge, and to share information and expertise – via thousands of workshops and seminars:

  • The ITU Radiocommunication Sector plays a vital role in the global management of the radio-frequency spectrum and satellite orbits – limited natural resources which are increasingly in demand from a large and growing number of services such as fixed, mobile, broadcasting, amateur, space research, emergency telecommunications, meteorology, global positioning systems, environmental monitoring and communication services – that ensure safety of life on land, at sea and in the skies. This work is supported by highly expert, specialized seminars which help prepare World Radiocommunication Conferences.
    • ITU-R convenes World Radiocommunication Seminars biennially, supported by Regional Radiocommunication Seminars, and ITU Inter-regional Workshops. These seminars address the use of radio-frequency spectrum and satellite orbits.
    • Satellite Communications Symposia and ITU Satellite Webinars cover non-geostationary satellite systems for the provision of broadband service, innovations in geostationary satellite systems and highlight the role of ITU in preventing and mitigating interference.
  • ITU’s work on standards is undertaken by the ITU-T Sector. The work is of critical importance to the interoperability of ICTs and is vital in ensuring that countries’ ICT networks and devices speak the same language. ITU-T workshops, forums and symposia discuss emerging trends in standardization, enhance collaboration with other bodies and encourage peer learning – and cover a range of topics including 5G, the environment, smart cities, intelligent transport systems, artificial intelligence, disaster risk reduction and more.
  • The Telecommunication Development Sector works to close the digital divide and drive digital transformation to leverage the power of ICTs for economic prosperity, job creation, digital skills development, gender equality, diversity, a sustainable and circular economy – and for saving lives. The sector’s workshops and seminars cover innovation, digital inclusion, capacity development, digital services and applications, cybersecurity, emergency telecommunications, environment, network and digital infrastructure, policy and regulations, statistics and more. Recent months have seen members benefit from workshops and training on emergency telecommunications and the development of national emergency telecommunication plans while regional capacity development workshops have helped boost digital skills.
