Background
The ITU Collaboration on ITS Communication standards (CITS), established, in September 2023, the Expert Group on Communications Technology for Automated Driving (EG-ComAD). At its meeting, on 24 October 2025, the EGComAD established the third of its working groups:
WG3 on Technical and Economic Sustainability for Vehicular Communications.
This Working Group addresses how communication technologies can remain functional, secure, and up-to-date throughout the vehicle lifecycle balancing technology neutrality, industry adaptability, and long-term service continuity.
WG3 builds on collaboration between the automotive and telecommunications sectors, fostering a shared understanding of lifecycle considerations and evolving connectivity needs.
Topics in Focus
WG3 focuses on ensuring the technical and economic sustainability of vehicular communications.
Furthermore, WG3 explores how communication technologies can remain functional, secure, and sustainable throughout the vehicle lifecycle, balancing technology neutrality, industry adaptability, and long-term service continuity.
A non-exhaustive list of items for WG3 is:
- Define the problem statement related to the updateability and longevity of vehicular communication modules.
- Examine differences between automotive and consumer communication device lifespans, and their implications for regulatory and technical frameworks.
- Promote industry-led adaptation, enabling manufacturers to maintain service continuity and complience through innovation rather than regulation.
- Facilitate a structure dialogue between the automotive and telecommunication sectors to establish cooperative frameworks for sustainable vehicular connectivity.
