François van Schalkwyk is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology (CREST), Stellenbosch University, South Africa. Broadly speaking, his research interest is the study of science as a social institution. Specific research areas include higher education studies, critical data and technology studies, and scholarly communication. Recent publications include ‘Researching research universities in Africa’ (in A Research Agenda for Global Higher Education), ‘Democratic and expert legitimacy: Science, politics and the public during the COVID-19 pandemic’ (in Science Public Policy), and ‘Reporting preprints in the media during the COVID-19 pandemic’ (in Public Understanding of Science).
François is also a consulting researcher to SBC4D and Step Up, as well as editor and trustee of the not-for-profit, open access scholarly book publisher African Minds, and associate editor of the journal Learned Publishing. François holds a bachelor degree in English literature (University of Cape Town), masters’ degrees in education (University of the Western Cape) and in publishing (Stirling University), and a doctoral degree in science and technology studies (Stellenbosch University).
