Richard Smith is a Senior Business Leader within the Security and Risk division of MasterCard Europe. Mr. Smith is responsible for the Europe Region, encompassing 53 countries and serving 9,000 MasterCard financial institutions. He is also the chairman of the European Security Advisory Committee.
Before taking up his present role, Mr. Smith was responsible for Security and Risk activities in Northern Europe. One of his responsibilities was to manage the UK Security Committee, and was actively involved in the CHIP and PIN project.
Previously, Mr. Smith was the Risk Services Manager for UK and Ireland. He was responsible for day to day fraud management for MasterCard customers and worked closely with the Banks to share and develop best practice in all aspects of fraud management. He joined MasterCard in 2000.
Mr. Smith began his banking career at NatWest Bank, where he spent 14 years. In the later years at NatWest Mr. Smith was manager of Fraud Operations Department, and was responsible for the development and implementation of their fraud strategy. Mr. Smith was also responsible for the investigation of organized crime groups, working closely with law Enforcement Agencies.
He is English, married with one daughter. His interests include football, Golf and travel.
