Broadcom
John Johnson holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University and is currently Director of Component R&D at Broadcom’s Optical Systems Division, a business descended from AT&T Bell Laboratories which he joined in 1993. His research has included a wide range of optical components including DFB lasers, electroabsorption modulated lasers, tunable lasers and coherent receivers. He has been an active participant in multiple global standards development organizations and MSAs, including IEEE 802.3, OIF, ITU-T SG15 and Fibre Channel.





Person Icon Stephen Shew
Ciena
​Stephen Shew is Principal, Network Standards at Ciena where he coordinates standards strategy and participation, and contributes to standards development. Since 2013, he has been the Rapporteur of Question 12 (Transport network architectures) in ITU-T Study Group 15 (SG15) and is currently a SG15 vice-chair. In SG15 he has been editor of many Recommendations and has collaborated across multiple Questions. He has contributed to standards development in the Optical Internetworking Forum, Open Networking Foundation, MEF, and IETF standards bodies. His contributions include topics in media and network architecture, management and control, and software defined networking. He has over 25 granted patents. Stephen received his Bachelor of Computer Science from Carleton University and MSc from the University of Toronto, and is an IEEE Senior member

She is responsible for shaping portfolio positioning, driving market strategy, and connecting complex network technologies into business value for network operators, cloud providers, and enterprise customers navigating the next era of AI-driven infrastructure transformation.With more than 30 years in the telecommunications industry, Helen has held roles spanning portfolio marketing, product management, systems engineering, customer program management, and manufacturing engineering. Her cross-functional background gives her a unique perspective on how technology innovation, operational realities, and market dynamics intersect to shape the future of networking. Helen joined Ciena following the Nortel Networks Metro Ethernet Networks (MEN) acquisition
