U4SSC in 2023

The seventh meeting of U4SSC was organized by ITU together with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), and the United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat) on 20 June 2023, virtually.

The seventh meeting approved the annual plan and brought together over 254 participants.

Over 200 cities worldwide are already implementing U4SSC Key Performance Indicators.

This year the U4SSC worked across six thematic groups.

Over the course of the year three publications were released as part of the U4SSC initiative.

The thematic group on Digital Wellbeing aims to research and benchmark existing digital wellbeing frameworks, approaches, and interventions. Preliminary analysis indicates fragmented approaches to digital wellbeing. The thematic group will then create a digital wellbeing framework encompassing factors that contribute to it at the individual level (e.g. skills, devices, connectivity, digital services experiences, security and safety, digital environment, etc).

The U4SSC KPIs are a vital tool for cities wishing to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. They support cities and communities worldwide in evaluating their level of smartness and sustainability. These indicators measure various aspects including economic, environmental, and social sustainability, as well as ICT accessibility, aiming to support cities in their transition towards becoming smarter and more sustainable.

Over 200 cities worldwide are already implementing these KPIs. Some of the latest cities implementing the U4SSC KPIs include Astana, Bishkek, Goris, Voznesensk, and Tbilisi.

Furthermore, ITU has published the City Snapshot and Verification Report on Anyang, Korea (Republic of).
