Summary: Multi-user VR services create a multi-user VR experiences, where users can interact with each other and the virtual world simultaneously. The STB can serve multiple-users in a household for family members to play the VR games. The STB serves each user independently means every VR frame for user is separately rendered by the STB and fully transmitted to the HMD. The HMD capture the data about position of head, render the image based on the data, then display the image when next scene is due to be on screen. The computation and communication overheads of such VR frame rendering grow with the number of concurrent VR multi-users to provide 360 degree immersive experience with UHD video quality. Rendering such VR frames produces around 26GB frame data every sec. However, with 60 frames per sec (fps) but only a portion of such data (Field of View) timely transmitted to HMD. The frame rate here is a screen refreshing rate. This elaborates the functional requirements for a cable set-top box capable of supporting Ultra-High-Definition video and multi-user Virtual Reality services. It introduces the system architecture and specifies the minimum requirements for the STB to decode and output UHD video with resolutions of 4K, 8K, or higher. Additionally, the STB should be compatible with VR services, utilizing either cable or WLAN IEEE 802.11be technology.
