Summary: Although DPI is one class of strong network application/service awareness technologies, there are some disadvantages related to DPI and some application scenarios that DPI can’t take effect. It is necessary to find another class of application/service technologies to solve the problem related to DPI, and deep flow inspection (DFI) is the proper technology. DFI is a class of service/application awareness technologies that uses a flow recognition technique based on traffic behavior, where different types of applications exhibit different states on session connections or data flows. DFI can be applied in the application scenarios (e.g. encrypted traffic) in which DPI is not appropriate to be used. In reality, DFI can be used in all application scenarios that need service/application awareness functions. It is helpful to specify function architecture and mechanism of DFI because it can facilitate design, implementation and deployment of DFI functions.
