According to ITU-T Rec E. 800 Quality of Service is defined as the totality of characteristics of a telecommunications service that bear on its ability to satisfy stated and implied needs of the user of the service. WTO also defines counterfeit as the unauthorized representation of a registered trademark carried on goods identical or similar to goods for which the trademark is registered, with a view to deceiving the purchaser into believing that he/she is buying the original goods. Counterfeit mobile devices pose QoS delivery issues. Studies conducted have shown that such mobile devices suffered from low call completion rates, high call drop rates and handover failures. A survey conducted in the Africa region revealed that all categories of mobile phones were perceived to be the most counterfeited ICT devices in the region. This technical report will outline the challenges and impact of counterfeit mobile devices on Quality of Service for the users and networks.
