ITU-T G.872建议书描述了使用ITU-T G.800、ITU-T G.805和ITU-T G.807建议书中描述的建模方法的光传输网（OTN）功能结构。从网络层的角度对OTN的功能进行了描述，同时考虑到OTN用户端的特征信息、用户端/服务器层的关联、联网拓扑以及提供多路复用、路由、数字客户端监视的层网络功能和光媒体网络结构。OTN的数字层使用ITU-T G.709规定的帧格式。网络的媒体部分从媒体架构、媒体元素和光信号维护实体的角度进行了描述。第1修正案更新了ITU-T G.872（2019年），以与ITU-T G.807（2020年）第1修正案保持一致。本修正案还增加了对OTU25和OTU50接口的描述，并完善了对灵活OTN接口的描述。
