Meaningful digital development

At the UN climate conference, COP30, in Belém, Brazil, we mobilized our partners to highlight how technologies can help build a low-carbon future. The new Green Digital Action Hub will help countries find ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, both within the sector and across the whole economy. At the same time, we joined Brazilian regulator Anatel and UNESCO in unveiling the Artificial Intelligence Climate Institute, aimed at empowering developing countries to design and apply AI-driven solutions for a greener future.

At Chad’s fragile border with Sudan, ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin, UNHCR Deputy High Commissioner Kelly T. Clements, and GSMA Mobile for Development Foundation President John Giusti, witnessed the challenges faced by refugees and host communities. Their joint mission highlighted how improved digital access is helping people pursue education, improve their livelihoods and tap into essential services.

At South Africa’s G20 Summit, our Secretary-General urged countries to help each other strengthen connectivity, develop skills and adopt international standards to ensure that AI expands opportunities for everyone, everywhere.

Our latest annual Facts and Figures report shows almost three-quarters of the world’s population now online, yet 2.2 billion people remain offline – most of them in low- and middle-income countries.

Our World Telecommunication Development Conference, WTDC-25, brought together about 2,000 participants to set the agenda for human-centred digital development and impact. The resulting Baku Action Plan reflects the needs, priorities and aspirations of countries and communities worldwide.
