ITU year in review 2024
The digital future starts here!
At the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), we are dedicated to connecting everyone, everywhere.
As the United Nations agency for digital technologies, we aim to connect some 2.6 billion people who are still offline, spur innovation for good, and make the dawning digital age healthy, safe and prosperous for all.
These pages outline many of the ways we are boosting connectivity, shaping digital transformation, and delivering digital impact.
Or you can revisit key moments in 2024 through annual highlights from ITU’s diary.
A word from our Secretary-General
If 2024 has taught me anything, it’s that digital is an irrefutable force for unity — a much-needed catalyst for global cooperation in an increasingly fragmented world.
This truth has been on display all year long, sometimes against the odds. And it’s evident in the adoption of the Pact for the Future and Global Digital Compact at the United Nations General Assembly, in calls to further enhance ITU technical standards, and in the wide endorsement of the COP29 Declaration on Green Digital Action.

“From the promise of the Global Digital Compact to the call for enhanced ITU standards, 2024 is the year digital solutions took their rightful place in our shared vision of progress driving transformative and sustainable change. In 2025, as we mark ITU’s 160th anniversary, let’s turn those commitments into meaningful action on connectivity, resilience, bridging digital divides, and building a future where digital truly works for all of humanity and our planet.”
