AI for Good Innovate for Impact
The primary aim of the real-time speech-to-sign-language translator is to develop a seamless
communication system for the deaf community, enhancing accessibility and participation in
various spheres of life. Objectives include:
• Ensuring accurate translation of spoken language to sign language in real-time. 4.7: Education
• Capturing the emotional and contextual nuances of speech for more meaningful
communication.
• Incorporating flexibility for diverse sign languages, accents, and cultural expressions.
• Empowering individuals to engage equally in educational, professional, and social spaces.
Innovative Technological Approach
1. Advanced Speech Recognition: AI models trained to recognize diverse accents, languages,
and speech patterns in real-time.
2. Gesture Recognition and Generation: Neural networks process gestures and facial
expressions to create visually accurate sign language translations.
3. Machine Learning Adaptability: Models that learn and improve with user feedback, enabling
customization for personal or cultural variations in sign language.
4. Integration with Wearable Devices: Smart glasses or portable displays can discreetly provide
sign language output, ensuring accessibility in any environment.
5. Ethical and Inclusive Design: Collaboration with deaf communities ensures cultural relevance
and respect for sign language nuances.
Expected Impact and Benefits:
• Promote Social Inclusion: Enable seamless interaction between hearing and deaf
individuals, eliminating barriers that hinder collaboration and understanding.
• Increase Accessibility: Provide equal opportunities in education, employment, and public
services, empowering individuals with disabilities to thrive.
• Enhance Independence: Allow deaf individuals to navigate diverse environments
independently, without requiring constant interpreter support.
• Foster Innovation: Push technological boundaries, leading to advancements in AI,
machine learning, and assistive technologies.
• Celebrate Diversity: Embrace the idea that "disability is not an inability," showcasing the
capabilities and contributions of individuals with disabilities.
Partners
• National Disability Association of Zimbabwe: they are helping us with giving us access to
the deaf community so we can learn the Zimbabwe sign language.
22 Benefits of use case
Our project (Little Signs) enables the deaf and hard–of–hearing students to access spoken
classroom content in real time while fostering and promoting an inclusive learning environment
for all from preschool level up to tertiary level. It also supports equal participation.
