Summary: With the increasing Internet adoption and penetration and Asia’s high population density, the technologies like Wi-Fi, NR-U can further enhance the socio-economic value with associated economies of scale, increased productivity and efficiency. Technologies like Wi-Fi and NR-U and other such technologies have empowered people and communities through socio-economic opportunities in under- developed and developing areas where Internet connectivity and speed is poor and unaffordable. World Bank has estimated that a 10 percent increase in broadband penetration increases a country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 1.3 percent. A recent study by the Wi-Fi Alliance predicts that the global socio-economic value of Wi-Fi will rise to a staggering US $4.9 Trillion by 2025. This socio-economic value includes contributions from the use of Wi-Fi by consumers, businesses, service providers, and more. The proposed new Technical Report aims to provide a comprehensive comparison matrix on local area networks using Wi-Fi, NR-U in different Asian and Oceanic countries. And it also targets to analyse the socio-economic impact on relevant stakeholders, and lessons learned.
