Actively engaging Rwanda’s private sector in e-waste management
In 2022, Rwanda generated 10 million kilograms of e-waste but only 20 per cent was formally collected and recycled, according to the 2024 Global E-waste Monitor. Given the rapid rise in digitalization and consumption of electronic devices, Rwanda seeks to implement robust recycling and disposal systems to mitigate environmental damage and to protect public health. The private sector plays a crucial role for the rollout of e-waste regulations by endorsing the extended producer responsibility (EPR) policy principle. Discover more
Reflections on empowering underserved communities at the Global DTC Workshop 2025
Since operations began in 2020, the Digital Transformation Centre (DTC) Initiative – a partnership between the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and Cisco to strengthen and bridge the gap of people’s digital skills – has had significant impact around the world; to date, 500,000 people from underserved communities have been trained in digital literacy and basic digital skills. Advancing digital transformation through the Innovation Centre in New Delhi
The impact of the ITU Innovation Centre in New Delhi, India, is steadily expanding beyond the country’s borders, evident in more than two years of capacity-building and policy-shaping initiatives in Asia and the Pacific. Since its inauguration in March 2023 by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Innovation Centre has hosted a range of events and workshops and launched the ITU Innovation Café as a platform for brainstorming, turning innovative ideas into real impact, and deepening partnerships on all aspects of digital transformation.
