Strengthening statistical capacity in Africa to drive universal and meaningful connectivity

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS) at Tohoku University co-organized a landmark regional workshop in Sendai, Japan, in 2025, marking the first-ever collaboration between the two institutions. Supported by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), the event convened participants from 18 ITU Member States across Asia and the Pacific to strengthen disaster preparedness through resilient digital infrastructure and innovative technologies. Spotlight on: Concept, the ITU Digital Transformation Centre in Senegal

As the ITU Digital Transformation Centre (DTC) in Senegal, Concept, a national NGO focused on promoting local development, has delivered basic and intermediate digital skills programs in 65 ICT training centres nationwide. Five of these centres are dedicated to serving people with visual impairments and children, where they can gain the tools to participate meaningfully in the digital world. As part of the DTC network, Concept has access to a wide range of resources that strengthen their capacity to deliver impactful digital education, including: high-quality training material developed by DTC initiative partners, collaboration with other institutions in the network, and financial and technical support to help deliver their training courses. Empowering young women in Nepal through Girls in ICT Day

Despite women making up more than half of Nepal’s population, they remain significantly underrepresented in the country’s ICT and digital technology sectors, accounting for just 7.88 percent of the workforce in ICT companies, according to a recent study conducted by Women in Information Technology.
