DPI PARTNERS NCC, ITU ON GIRLS IN ICT DAY 2016

Digital Peers International, a non profit, non governmental Organization in conjunction with Nigeria's telecom regulator, NCC, and ITU organized the 2016 edition of the International Girls' in ICT Day in Abuja, Nigeria for 148 –girls and teachers. Girls' in ICT Day is a global event celebrated every fourth Thursday in April to celebrate girls' interest and strength in ICT, encourage and empower them to choose careers and courses in ICTs.
DPI's commitment to this Girls' in ICT day course is due the alignment of the event aim with her vision of raising a young generation of IT savvy youths, girls inclusive for national transformation and global competitiveness. This is her fifth time in organizing the event in Abuja
The event which took place at the Nigerian National Merit House, Abuja, on April 28, 2016 brought together 148-participants drawn from 14-secondary schools in the FCT. The participants were 134-girls and 14-teachers in all.
Also, 4-female, ICT savvy resource persons spoke at the event on topics centered on the theme: Expanding Horizons, Changing Attitudes.

Key Highlights of the event includes:

(A) Key Note Speech, Motivational speech and Interactive Sessions

1. Key note speech on the theme: Expanding Horizons, Changing Attitudes by an accomplished female IT executive, the CEO of an IT consulting firm.
2. Motivational speech on Opportunities for the Girl Child in ICT: My Experience by a female resource person, the Head Information Technology of Nigerian Telecommunication Commission
3. Interactive session Demystifying ICT for Girls Inclusion by a female Nigerian blogger, who, having no formal ICT background but using ICT today to grow her career as blogger, whose blog is read in over 100-countries
4. Another interactive session on The Place of Girls in the Global IT Space delivered by an IT savvy female resource person.

(B) Quiz Competition

The quiz competition was a test of the ICT knowledge of the girls. All fourteen schools present went
through the first phase of the competition. Nine made it to the second round. At the end of the second
round, only six made it. The winners in the first, second and third categories won Tablets and plaques
for their various schools respectively. Consolatory prizes were also given to the 4th, 5th and 6th places
respectively.

(C) ICT Poem Recitation: An ICT Poem was written and read by a student of one the schools present

(D) Excursion: The scheduled excursion to the Communication Facility of Nigerian Communication
Satellite could not hold due to administrative logistics in executing the excursion to the facility.

Feedback and testimonials came in from all but summarized under the following points:

1. More girls should be reached to participate in the event.
2. I never knew ICT is this interesting, I would consider taking a course in ICT in college
3. There should be more stakeholder participation/involvement to be able to achieve the goal of the event
4. More resources should be made available to Organizers to be able to reach out to those at the grassroots

Overall, the goal of the event this year, to Expand Horizons, and Change Girls' Attitudes toward ICT was
achieved. The feedback/testimonials received attest to this. The gains achieved were worth every effort and
resources injected into the program by Digital Peers International, a non profit, NGO with headquarter
in Abuja, Nigeria and partners.​
