Four female members of staff of the Information Technology Services Division in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, Commerce and Information Technology travelled to the Grenadine island of Bequia on Wednesday, April 23rd 2014 to celebrate Girls in ICT Day with a workshop, involving the third and fourth form female girls of the Bequia Seventh-Day Adventist Secondary School and the Bequia Community High School.

The girls were enlightened on various career choices in Information Technology, cyber dangers and how children can be protected when using the Internet. They were also educated about the benefits that can be derived from using the Internet from the perspective of the student and the businessman.

A 'Text-Off' Competition was also conducted. Winners received cell phone credit from telecommunications providers LIME and Digicel.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines, 2014, April 24

On Thursday and Friday, 24th and 25th April and Wednesday 30th April 2014, approximately two hundred and fifty-eight (258) third and fourth form girls from twenty-one (21) secondary schools across St. Vincent and the Grenadines were privileged to participate in this year's celebration of International Girls in ICT day.
The students had the esteemed opportunity to visit a diverse array of private and public sector institutions, which included banks, Internet cafes manufacturing companies, credit unions, government ministries and departments, laboratories and the like. This celebration has become a much anticipated event by both students and teachers alike to the extent that it has been included in the Ministry of Education's (the governing body for all schools), yearly calendar.

At the institutions the girls were exposed to careers in ICT and the practical use and importance of at least one form of technology that is employed in the daily operations of the institution. They also had the opportunity to gain some hands-on experience where possible and would have benefitted tremendously from the exposure.
