6 Verification guidance
6.1 Initial screening
There are several issues that have arisen during previous verifications and basic data elements that
will be reviewed here to ensure a successful verification. These checks will ensure that the initial
submission from a city is sufficiently complete to undertake a verification.
Precalculated Values
• The data submission template has many prefilled values for population and household numbers.
• Check the submission template to see if any of the precalculated values have been changed.
• If they have been changed, review them and ensure that the values entered are consistent.
Population / Households
• Check the overall submission and ensure that there is consistency in the population numbers
and number of households. Remember that the numbers submitted are not always consistent
due to the different years in which the data were collected.
• Variations of more than 5 per cent across the report should be investigated.
1 / 100 000 Population
• Many KPIs use the denominator of 1/100 000th of the population. Check that the number is
accurate throughout the submission.
• NOTE: If the population is 100 000, then 1/100 000th of the population = 1
Currency
• Review the currency values used in the data submission and ensure that they are updated in
the data-collection template.
• Check with the city and update any values that have not been specified.
City GDP
• Check the city GDP and the currency reported.
• Check with national statistics and ensure that there is not a wide discrepancy.
City Area
• Check the overall submission and ensure that there is consistency in the size of the city area.
