The Joint Video Experts Team (JVET) between

VCEG (Q6/16) and ISO/IEC JTC1 SC29’s MPEG was created on 27 October 2017 to develop Versatile Video Coding (
VVC), a new video compression standard with capabilities beyond HEVC (ITU-T

H.265 | ISO/IEC 23008-2). This formal effort followed the

exploration phase started in October 2015 and conducted by experts of both groups.

Upon completion of the first edition of the new standard (ITU-T H.266 | ISO/IEC 23090-3), the scope of JVET was amended in 2020 to also cover other existing jointly developed video compression algorithms, such as H.264/AVC and H.265/HEVC, and exploration studies of candidate technology for potential future video coding standardization action.
