Dr. Shamil Appathurai
Senior Manager – Master Planning & Transmission Planning
Shamil is involved in the technology strategy of the company. This is in line with Mobitel’s vision “to lead Sri Lanka towards an info-com and knowledge rich society”. He is responsible for the backhauling of Mobitel’s GSM and UMTS network, and was also instrumental in demonstrating South Asia’s first LTE Trial in May 2010. He has over 10 years experience of working in the Telecommunications industry in both Europe and South Asia. This includes 4 years with British Telecommunications (UK) where he worked on the design and roll-out of the UK’s fibre access network. He did his Ph.D at University College London and his research was in collaboration with Nortel Networks (UK) working on their long-haul fibre optic systems. Shamil has a further 2 years experience working as a consultant in technology transfer and the commercialisation of research projects. His other interests are in techno-economic modelling and renewable energy.
