In order to mitigate the warming in our cities and to ensure a liveable and comfortable quality of streets, squares and other public spaces at a pedestrian level, we need more knowledge. This supposes a clever acquisition of relevant data and a clever analysis needed to implement a more sensitive approach in the urban planning.feelcity is an extensive project dealing with climatic urban design. The aim of the project is to develop and share a methodology and affordable measurement equipment which can easily deployed on streets, squares and other public spaces at a pedestrian level. The equipment collects quantitative (physical) and qualitative (visual) environmental data that is georeferenced and correlated to evaluate the urban environment. The monitoring equipment is embedded into a small backpack that is carried during a « climatic urban walk » that can be repeated at different times of the day or seasons so to yield a dynamic view of the climatic and air quality of a portion of the city. Current research focuses on optimizing the data retrieval and storage and by developing an immersive graphical user interface. An important task will be the development of a signature database system to be used to identify similar cases of urban development to serve as a design tool for urban planner and city authorities.
