Frederik Tilmann heads the seismology section of GFZ, which in addition to research activities is responsible for operating the GEOFON seismic network, data archive and earthquake monitoring system. He received his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 1999, and worked at New Mexico State University (USA) and GEOMAR (research centre for marine geosciences, Kiel, Germany) and from 2003-2010 as a lecturer again at the University of Cambridge before taking up his current position. He also holds a professorship at the Freie Universität Berlin. His research interests are the application of seismology to understanding processes in subduction zones and continental collision.
He also is interested in supporting infrastructure initiatives in the field benefiting seismological research. From 2012-2016 he served on the Executive Committee of ORFEUS (www.orfeus-eu.org), and has been a member of the ITU/WMO/UNESCO Joint Task Force on SMART cables, Science & Society since 2015.
