The SetGMDI Kick-off Meeting builds on a series of earlier round tables co-organized by OpenSense and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which explored models for sharing microwave link performance data for opportunistic weather sensing. This meeting focused on establishing the organizational structure of the Global Microwave Link Data Collection Initiative (GMDI) and defining concrete activities related to the legal and technical aspects of data collection, archiving, and processing
The program also included a hybrid session with key stakeholders—particularly mobile network operators and experts from World Meteorological Organization (WMO) —who played an essential role in pilot studies testing the SetGMDI prototype.
The objectives of the meeting was but its not limited to::
- Reviewing the current status of GMDI activities
- Establishing a management structure for the SetGMDI project
- Developing a roadmap with concrete activities for the next six months
- Discussing the progress on the ITU recommendation regarding the sharing of link performance data for opportunistic weather monitoring
- Engaging relevant stakeholders in GMDI activities
