Interoperability test was conducted between caption servers, an IPTV caption proxy server and an IPTV terminal device.
Accessibility information was provided remotely by several different third party sources over the Internet to a caption transmitting server. The caption transmitting server retrieves caption data and transmits it with metadata to an IPTV terminal device which merges the accessibility information and video content, as if they were multiplexed like usual broadcasting services.
Caption text displayed on the terminal device was controlled accordingly as described in ITU-T Rec. H.702 (ex H.IPTV- AccProf.). The findings obtained during this testing has contributed to discussions in finalizing the draft Recommendation ITU-T H.702 just before the consent.
By implementing this option, broadcasters, operators, etc. can provide their audience with closed captioning, an important part of accessibility functions, in an inexpensive and efficient fashion.
