Third ITU test event, followed by a Roundtable, on compatibility of mobile phones and vehicle hands-free terminals

web_logo.jpgThe third ITU test event on performance assessment of mobile phones as gateways to car hands-free systems according to Recommendations ITU-T P.1100 and ITU-T P.1110 is scheduled to take place in Bangkok, Thailand from 15 to 16 November 2016 during ITU Telecom World.

The test event will be followed by a Roundtable among the automotive and mobile phone industries to discuss future actions to improve connectivity and voice quality of mobile phones wirelessly connected with vehicle hands-free terminals, including a proposal to introduce a special logo which may appear on a HFT’s display in a car when a ‘listed’ phone connects to it.

The ‘list’ will be updated with the mobile phones which work properly with a vehicle's hands-free telephone system.

Participation in the ITU test event is open to car manufacturers, hands-free terminals (HFT) system suppliers, mobile network operators and mobile phone vendors.

Participation in the Roundtable is open to participants of the first ITU test event, the second ITU test event and/or the current test event, on-demand testing and invited experts. The mobile vendors whose phones have been tested at these events may also participate in the Roundtable.

Kindly register your interest of participation by 15 October 2016 by sending an e-mail to conformity[at]

    • To assess performance and quality of the voice communication of mobile phone in conjunction with vehicle-mounted Hands-free telephone systems in accordance with Chapter 12 (“Verification of the transmission performance of short-range wireless (SRW) transmission enabled phones”) of Recommendations ITU-T P.1100 and ITU-T P.1110 (01/2015)
    • To update the "list of mobile phones" with the phones which passed the tests
    • To provide details of tests to participating companies to inform them whether mobile phones are configured properly
    • To discuss the testing results among the participants (e.g. automotive industry, mobile phone vendors, etc.) for improving the voice quality
    • To discuss future actions to address this issue, including a procedure for ITU to grant a special logo to mobile phones which successfully passed the ITU tests
    • To provide anonymized testing results and the experiences gained at this testing event into
      ITU-T Study Group 12

Test event: Terms and conditions, participation fee

Participation fee starts at 6000 €, which includes:

    • Eight tests with a two-page report per test summarizing detailed test results including a “Quality Pie Chart” as specified in Recommendation ITU-T P.505. An example of such a detailed test report is found here.
    • The evaluation of one mobile phone in both modes, narrowband and wideband, will be considered as two tests.
    • In cases where more than eight tests are required (8 + N tests), the participation fee increases accordingly. The cost for each additional test (narrowband or wideband) including documentation (test report) is 500 €, thus the participation fee increases to 6000 € + N x 500 €.
    • An analysis compiling and comparing results of all mobile phones tested in this event will be made available in an “Anonymized Test Report”. “Anonymized” means that the model, software version, company name or brand of the mobile phone is not mentioned.
    • Suggestions for improvement of the devices tested.
    • The full amount of the participation fee must be paid to ITU no later than 1 November 2016. Details of how to make the payment will be provided upon request.
    • Car manufacturers, HFT suppliers and mobile network operators participants will receive the two-page test report of all mobile phones tested in this event containing the model, software version, company name and brand of the mobile phones. ITU and the selected test lab (HEAD acoustics) will coordinate among participants to avoid overlapping requests for the same model of phone.
    • A mobile phone vendor participant will only receive the detailed test results of their own mobile phone(s) with important information about the current performance of each of their device(s) and hints for potential improvement. ITU and HEAD acoustics will not provide the detailed testing results of mobile phones provided by one mobile phone vendor to other mobile phone vendor(s). Car manufacturers, HFT suppliers or mobile network operators as participants are not allowed to share the detailed test results of a mobile phone of a particular vendor with other mobile phone vendor(s).
    • ITU and HEAD acoustics will not make the names of the participating companies publicly available unless the company agrees.
    • Participants are allowed to advertise publicly which mobile phones (model, software version, company name and brand) they recommend (positive and negative).
    • ITU will update the list of mobile phones compliant with chapter 12 of ITU-T P.1100 and ITU-T P.1110 with the mobile phones which successfully passed the tests.
    • Participants should provide ITU with mobile phones to be tested in one of two ways: participants may ship the mobile phones to ITU in advance by 27 October 2016 at the latest, or participants may bring the mobile phones on-site on the first day of the event.
Please note that as a specialized agency of the United Nations, ITU is exempt from all customs duties under the International Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the Specialized Agencies. All goods for the ITU must be routed via Geneva. In agreement with the Swiss Customs administration in Geneva, customs clearance can only be affected in Geneva. ITU's address for shipments will be provided upon request.
    • In cases in which a participant is willing to join under the terms and conditions defined beforehand but cannot provide a mobile phone, HEAD acoustics will endeavor to source a device for testing e.g. from a network operator or a mobile phone manufacturer for testing. In this case, if a network operator or mobile phone vendor loans a mobile phone to this testing event, the detailed testing result of the loaned device will be made available for free to that company and the one paying for the tests. The detailed testing reports of all tested mobile phones will be available to all car manufacturers, HFT suppliers and mobile network operator participants.
    • HEAD acoustics will test the mobile phones of one specific mobile phone vendor during a specific time slot (one mobile vendor per dedicated time slot), and hold conference calls to discuss the test results with participants either daily or per mobile phone vendor as appropriate.
    • Car manufacturers, HFT suppliers and network operator participants are invited to witness the tests for all phones and participate in discussions at any time, either in person or via conference call. A specific mobile phone vendor participant is only invited to witness the tests during the dedicated time slots when their devices are tested, and participate only in discussions relevant to their devices, either in person or via conference call.
