Girls in ICT

أحداث الاحتفال باليوم العالمي للفتيات في مجال تكنولوجيا المعلومات والاتصالات لعام 2014

Renault España - Women@Renault Group

Madrid / Valladolid, Spain, 2014, May 15

This year, for the first time, Renault España participated in the celebration of International Day of Girls in ICT. This participation, piloted by the Women@Renault group, consisted in organizing visits of female staff working at Renault to colleges to show girls in age of deciding their career, how a career in STEM  could be thrilling, according to  Renault women's experience.

A total of 300 girls took part in the event along with 15 female volunteers from Renault in Madrid and Valladolid.

The Spanish group Women@Renault proposed this initiative to be conducted worldwide, in every country where Renault has a presence. This year Women@Renault Colombia has been one of the participating countries with great success.

Volunteer's impressions were very positive:

  • I'm bored of listening on TV that Spain must invest in technology in order to get out from the crisis but don't have any leverage to do it. To invest a little time and effort to promote diversity in technology, is the only thing I can do, and it's what I've decided to do. Although the impact may be low, we shouldn't dismiss it, not just because it affects to the entire society, but also  our company, which would be enriched with a greater nursery of talents and a major diversity among them.
  • Just girls attended my speech, but for the next years, we will encourage also the boy's participation. Every change in our society must be based in agreement of both parts. We won't reach any change unless they are conscious, as we are,  of the dangers of negative stereotypes, in particular those that reinforce that women are worse than men in technology
  • This initiative is aligned with principles of college's foundress, who did it in 1600, with the aim of facilitating girl's education in Valladolid. Nowadays this school has a great percentage of gypsy students. In particular, there is a group of 10 years old gypsy girls, who had excellent educational expectancies if this would rely just in their capabilities. Unfortunately, as is frequent between women, her future doesn't depend exclusively on their skills.

Women@Renault are willing to take part again in 2015, increasing the number of volunteers, attendants and countries.
