International Girls in ICT Day has been established by ITU to create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in the growing field of information and communication technologies (ICTs).

"Int'l Girls in ICT Day 2013" was also celebrated in Nepal for the first time on April 25, 2013. The event was organized by MOIC (Ministry of Information and Communication) and NTA (Nepal Telecommunication's Authority) in collaboration with DBI, Equal Access Nepal and supported by ITU (International Telecommunications' Union) was held at St. Xavier's College from 1 to 6 pm.

The event aimed to encourage girls and women to use ICT and build up their career in ICT field. ICT is a fast growing sector and vital in the development of the nation. With more advancement in this sector more opportunities are being created every day. And it's not long before ICT will be a leading sector and strong force behind the economic system of the country. The event mainly intended to promote and encourage girls and young women to actively participate in the fields of ICT and benefit from it and contribute to it as well.

The event was attended by more than hundred female participants that include both students as well as working women. Few successful women among them made presentation on ICT and Women and how ICT can empower girls and women and motivated the students to use ICT and build up their career in the same field.

To promote this event NTA also organized essay competition for female students on: Role of ICT in Empowering Girls and Women" and top three winners were awarded with cash prize and certificate by the Chief Guest: Secretary of Ministry of Information and Communication Mr. Dhruba Prasad Sharma.

The Secretary at the Ministry of Information and Communication, Mr. Dhruba Prasad Sharma, repeated government commitment in the empowerment of girls and women, gender mainstreaming through extensive use of ICTs and said that government has made a number of targeted interventions through a number of initiatives.

Mr. Ananda Raj Khanal, Director and Acting Chief at Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) expressed satisfaction in initiating the celebration of Girls in ICT day from this year by bringing stakeholders, particularly the target group in this program. He also expressed his commitment to continue encouraging women and girls to pursue career in ICTs.

Similarly, Mr. Upendra Aryal, Director of DBI, Equal Access Nepal said, girls and women have more hardship compared to man in this region, emerging ICT tools and medium can be of miraculous support to overcome this hardship.

Finally, the program was concluded with the motive to empower and encourage girls and women to use ICT and build up career in ICT field and organizing the day every year with more and more no. of female participants.
