Summary:

With the rapid growth of satellite constellations and complex orbital missions, space-based edge cloud has become essential to overcome the bottlenecks of limited satellite-to-ground bandwidth and high communication latency. While ITU-T Y.3552 defines the functional requirements for general edge clouds, it does not fully cover the unique requirements in space environment. This supplement introduces the paradigm of Space-based Edge Cloud (SEC) as a specialized implementation of edge cloud in non-terrestrial environments. It provides capabilities to ensure computational reliability against single event upsets (SEU) and addresses stringent energy efficiency requirements under vacuum thermal constraints. By specifying technical considerations for heterogeneous physical resources, resource pooling, and lightweight service deployment, this supplement provides a standardized reference for building intelligent, autonomous, and reliable edge cloud in extreme environment.
