Recommendation ITU‑T G.9903 contains the Physical layer (PHY) and Data Link layer (DLL) specification for the G3‑PLC narrowband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) power line communication transceivers, for communications via alternating current and direct current electric power lines over frequencies below 500 kHz.
The control parameters that determine spectral content, power spectral density (PSD) mask requirements, and the set of tools and procedures to support the measurement and reduction of the transmit PSD can be found in Recommendation ITU-T G.9901.
In addition, a G3-PLC transceiver can be complemented with radio frequency (RF) lower layers resulting in a G3-Hybrid transceiver able to transmit and receive information over both PLC and RF media.
Amendment 1 covers CENELEC A, CENELEC B, ARIB and FCC bandplans. It adds the G3-Hybrid PLC & RF Profile as new Annex H.
Corrigendum 1 introduces various corrections and clarifications.
Amendment 2 covers CENELEC A, CENELEC B, ARIB and FCC bandplans, as well as G3-Hybrid. It adds new mechanisms to improve efficiency of broadcast transmissions (for both data traffic and LOADng RREQ routing messages) and extends the G3-Hybrid with new operating frequency bands, an RF transmit power adaptation mechanism, Frequency Hopping and a Last Gasp feature (consisting in an alerting mechanism in case a power outage is experienced by a device in the network).
Corrigendum 2 introduces various corrections and clarifications.
Amendment 3 covers CENELEC A, CENELEC B, ARIB and FCC bandplans, as well as G3-Hybrid. It introduces the support for RF-only Battery-Powered Leaf Nodes through the use of the existing Destination Address Set for which specific registration and unregistration mechanisms are specified. It also introduces a mechanism to detect address duplication or usurpation together and the possibility to use AES-256-CCM ciphering at the MAC sublayer, thus contributing to improved cybersecurity when operating a G3-PLC or G3-Hybrid network. In addition, a new High Data Rate mode is defined for PLC communications in clean environments such as in-premises dedicated power supply networks (in contrast to the noisy low voltage network used for communication in smart grid applications).
