Summary:
|
Natural surface water cooling has emerged as an effective low-carbon solution for reducing data center cooling energy consumption and carbon emissions. However, without unified assessment standards, this technology may introduce ecological risks such as thermal pollution, dissolved oxygen decline, and biodiversity loss. This Technical Report establishes a water environment sustainability evaluation framework for data centers utilizing natural surface water cooling, aiming to balance energy efficiency gains with aquatic ecosystem protection. The evaluation index covers four dimensions: thermal pollution from warm discharge water, water quality evaluation indicators (e.g., DO, pH, COD, BOD, sulfides, suspended solids, turbidity, sedimentation rate), aquatic organism evaluation indicators (average species abundance), and indicators for assessing water abstraction sustainability. The Report also addresses key technical challenges and mitigation measures including biofouling, corrosion, ecological disturbance, and sediment control, and provides a case study from the Jingshuitan Yunhu Data Center in Zhejiang, China to demonstrate practical implementation.
