Summary:
|
The revised Recommendation provides enhanced and update requirements and best practices, to reduce the environmental footprint of modern data centres while supporting evolving digital infrastructure demands, including AI-native and high-density computing environments. Building on the original framework, it expands guidance on energy efficiency, cooling, power management, facility design and operational optimization by incorporating emerging priorities such as AI readiness, advanced cooling systems, renewable energy integration, water stewardship, carbon management, circular economy approaches and enhanced sustainability metrics. The revision should also provide practical technical and sustainability assessment criteria to support the planning, evaluation and deployment of environmentally sustainable, resilient and AI-ready data centres. These criteria may guide the assessment of data centre proposals, designs and operations in relation to energy performance, power availability, cooling systems, renewable and low-carbon energy integration, water efficiency, resource efficiency, climate resilience, redundancy and reliability, AI workload readiness, monitoring and reporting, lifecycle environmental impacts and end-of-life management of ICT equipment.
Furthermore, the revision aims to support data centre owners, operators, governments and infrastructure planners in developing resilient, energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable data centres that align with climate objectives and enable responsible digital transformation.
