Summary:

This draft Recommendation will address the standardization gap in biodiversity monitoring for digital agriculture system. While existing frameworks support precision farming and environmental monitoring, they do not adequately capture biodiversity ecosystem parameters such as pollinator activity, insect diversity and species dynamics.
To address this challenge, this draft Recommendation proposes requirements for IoT-based biodiversity monitoring system that enable continuous, scalable and real-time observation of above-ground biodiversity. The system integrates multi-modal sensors including high-resolution camera, acoustic sensor, temperature, humidity, light intensity, soil moisture and thermal infrared sensors, combined with AI and machine learning based species identification and cloud-based analytics, to provide timely insights into ecosystem health, pollinator activity, pest presence and crop stress conditions.
This work complements the activities of ISO/TC 331 by addressing IoT-enabled biodiversity monitoring and interoperability requirements for digital agriculture systems.
This draft Recommendation will establish a foundation for biodiversity-enabled digital agriculture, supporting sustainable farming practices, improved productivity through ecosystem services and safe, secure and traceable agricultural production from farm to consumption.
