Summary:
|
Agriculture remains a critical pillar of national economies and food security, especially in developing countries where a significant population depends on farming for livelihood. In recent years, crop loss due to wildlife intrusion including animals such as wild boars, elephants, bluebuck, deer and monkeys has emerged as a serious challenge. These incidents lead to substantial economic losses, farmer distress, food supply instability and increased human–wildlife conflict. Traditional mitigation measures such as fencing, manual night guarding, scarecrows, firecrackers and chemical deterrents are often inefficient, labour-intensive, environmentally harmful or unsafe. They also lack scalability and do not provide systematic monitoring or early warning capabilities.
Existing wildlife intrusion monitoring systems are often developed as standalone or vendor-specific implementations using heterogeneous sensor interfaces, communication protocols, alerting mechanisms, AI inference methods and cloud platforms, resulting in limited interoperability across systems and deployments.
By utilizing the technologies such as IoT, AI, sensor networks, drones and communication technologies, it is possible to design an intelligent, technology-driven framework that provides proactive, humane and sustainable solutions for crop protection.
This draft Recommendation provides an overview, device requirements, network requirements, service support and application support requirements, interoperable communication mechanisms, standardized alerting and data exchange considerations for multi-vendor and heterogeneous deployments for IoT and AI-based intelligent systems for monitoring and mitigating wildlife intrusion in agricultural fields.
