Summary: The increasing use of IoT sensing devices, including mobile sensing devices (e.g. unmanned ground vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicles) and fixed sensing devices (e.g. soil sensors and field monitoring sensors), in digital agriculture generates heterogeneous farmland-related observations for target farmland areas. Such observations may include soil-related observations, field environmental observations, crop-related observations, and water condition observations. The use of such heterogeneous sensing devices raises common challenges, including inconsistent device and system design, fragmented information analysis capabilities, and lack of unified mechanisms for maintaining and using analysis results. This draft Recommendation addresses these issues by introducing a sensing-based information analysis system for digital agriculture (SIAS-DA), which provides a common ICT system-level basis for: – organizing farmland-related information obtained from multiple sensing devices by using common metadata (e.g. farmland area identification, time, location and information source); – forming and maintaining analysis results for target farmland areas by using common lifecycle attributes (e.g. result identification, version and validity); – providing maintained analysis results to agricultural management systems (e.g. farm management system) and related applications for crop selection, production planning and other agricultural management purposes. Requirements and capabilities are specified for the sensing-based information analysis system for digital agriculture.
