This supplement considers the use of TDM PON for transport of mobile variable bitrate fronthaul traffic (a.k.a. Low Layer Split (LLS)). It identifies the requirements that are set by the fronthaul traffic, and the capabilities and functionalities of TDM PON generations to support such requirements, including a description of possible trade-offs. The results covered in the supplement are naturally extendable to a TWDM PON system which contains multiple wavelength channels, each operating as TDM PON.
This document aims to help in the consideration of TDM/TWDM PON deployments for the use case of LLS, namely in the matching of mobile expectations with PON capabilities and vice-versa.
