Summary: GSTR-SDM “Optical fibre, cable, and components for space division multiplexing transmission” has been published on September 2022, which can be the baseline for deployment and standardization of space division multiplexing (SDM) system. Several field trials using the SDM fibre cables have been demonstrated and the commercial use of SDM fibre cable system for submarine network have been actively discussed recently. It is very essential for us to point to the perspective of the future optical fibre cable standards for the market and relating standardization bodies. To show our leadership on the telecom network standards in ITU-T, we propose to clarify the mandatory items which will be needed to start discussion for the new Recommendations for space division multiplexing optical fibres for as our new work item, in particular to clarify the following three items; Type of SDM optical fibre and their expected application area Relationship with existing G.65x series Recommendations Relating standardization objectives (e.g., test method and so on) including the relationship with IEC New Supplement G Suppl.G.65x describes the framework and roadmap to SDM optical fibres for developing the G.65x series Recommendations considering the above items. Based on the outcome of the new G Suppl.G.65x, then a determination will be made for new A.1 justification for developing new Recommendation for SDM optical fibre.
