Summary:
|
As a result of continued discussions across multiple questions within ITU-T SG15 on architectures for mobile optimized transport, a need has been established for multi-vendor interoperable optical interface specifications for either 12 uni-directional or 6 bi-directional WDM channels operating at 25 Gbit/s.
In consideration of limited existing optical cable resources and high construction investments for new cables, O-band based solutions are expected to satisfy these needs, by reuse of technologies developed for Ethernet applications.
A further need was established to enable development of multiple (non-compatible) solutions for this application space towards lowest cost.
These needs are expected to be accomplished via the creation of draft Recommendation G.owdm2, providing an alternative approach to the one defined in G.owdm, but optimized for 5 km distances instead of 10 km distances.
