Summary: With the popularity of mobile devices and the rise of OTT services and content distribution, service providers and operators have the requirement to optimize mobile traffic to improve end users' experiences, by deploying network functions such as video optimizer, URL filter, and content compression. Service function chaining in mobile network meets the needs for the traffic handling of different users by providing flexibly mechanism with addition of network functions. It analyses different type of traffic, and processes the traffic sequentially on demand. It generates flow control policy for controlling the flow through different service chains. Service function chaining identifies the traffic and makes the classification of the traffic, and then it processes and controls the traffic going through different service chains (i.e., a set of network functions) on demand according to the different types of the traffic. The benefits of the mechanism are to improve the reliability, flexibility and the transmission performance of the mobile network. The objective of this document is to describe the requirements, architecture, functional entities, reference points and information flows of service function chaining, and also consider the scenarios where network functions could be deployed in distributed networking.
