Summary: This proposed Recommendation describes overview, requirements and capabilities of data storage federation. DSF is a data service technology to map multiple data sources from heterogeneous storages located in different administration domains into a single data source logically, and provides a user a virtual single volume from the multiple data storages. By DSF, simplified management is achieved through central monitoring approach for the entire storage environment. Also DSF provides high flexibility by allowing transparent data movement between storage tiers, supporting a high-availability solution in the data centre, and enabling high-availability by federating multiple storages usable at any time. Therefore, this Recommendation can contribute to invigoration of big data industry and expected to lead cloud and big data markets. This work is based on: " Cloud computing - Overview and vocabulary defined in Y.3500 " Cloud computing - Reference architecture described in Y.3502 " Cloud computing infrastructure requirements described in Y.3510 " Framework of inter-cloud computing described in Y.3511 " Cloud computing framework for end to end resource defined in Y.3520 " Big data - Cloud computing based requirements and capabilities defined in Y.3600 " Big data exchange framework and requirements defined in Y.BigDataEX-reqts " Cloud services and devices : data flow, data categories and data use defined in ISO/IEC 19944
