ITU-T G.9805建议书提出了三种在公共光分发网络（ODN）上多代无源光网络（PON）共存的方法：共存网元（CE）、多PON模块（MPM）和基于分路器。当将传统PON演进到更高容量时，这些方法允许重用已经部署的光纤和分路器。还描述了用于计算共存网元所需隔离的方法、用于更高速无源光网络（HSP）和非对称/对称10千兆比特无源光网络光线路终端或XG（S）-PON OLT的滤波器考虑因素、以及用于支持B+、C+和D类光路损耗（OPL）的千兆比特无源光网络（G-PON）和XG（S）PON MPM的光接口参数。
