Making a city “smart” and “sustainable” is emerging as a strategy to tackle problems generated by indiscriminate urbanization. To close the gaps in the research about smart sustainable cities, this session will examine the smart sustainable city concept and will consolidate the available knowledge on this topic.

11:50 - 13:15 Session 2: Smart sustainable cities: a rising priority for decision-makers
Urban administrators around the world are facing the daunting question of whether to promote cities as drivers of economic growth or to pay heed to issues such as increasing population, resource overuse and dependence in cities. Accordingly, this session will highlight new more efficient ways of operating smart sustainable cities using information and communications technologies for city stakeholders to curb urban development issues.

Smart sustainable city transitions require an integrative framework that can be used to examine how national governments are envisioning smart city initiatives. This session will analyze the importance of devising a framework for smart sustainable cities, which can assist with the practical deployment of smart services in cities and the setting of feasible national urbanization goals.

Session 4: Partnering to build the cities we want: an international perspective  
Cities all over the world are attempting to respond to a myriad of pressures including population growth, environmental pollution and climate change by seeking new more efficient ways of establishing smart sustainable cities by operating through information and communications technologies. For the smooth transition to smart sustainable cities, it is necessary to identify and map the different international stakeholders involved thereby fostering broad cross-sectoral engagement and smooth implementation of smart city strategies. This session will examine the potential of international partnerships in the establishment of smart sustainable cities.

09:15 - 10:30 Session 5: The future at stake: smart solutions and sustainable ambitions for the cities of tomorrow
The investments in digital infrastructure for smart sustainable cities are designed to improve the built environment and confront the challenges of urbanization. From promoting the building of energy efficient buildings to creating intelligent transport networks and establishing e-health networks, cities are seeking to become “smarter” and more sustainable by using an ICT-based network for the delivery of urban services. This session will conduct discussions on the various services a smart sustainable city should be equipped with to improve the quality of life of its citizens.

10:30 - 11:30 Session 6: Driving the global smart sustainable city targets: importance of international standards
Cities and municipal administrations before they embark on a smart sustainable city journey, need to develop strategies and understand the progress related to the use of ICT for making cities smarter and more sustainable. This session will exclusively present the first international list of key performance indicators and standards developed by ITU and UNECE to assist with the evaluation of ICT´s contributions in making cities smarter and more sustainable and also help each city quantify their smart city achievements by bringing all cities on a level playing field.

Smart sustainable cities are able to mitigate the rising urban development problems while building resilience to disasters and adapting to climate change. This session will explore the features of smart sustainable cities which make them an ideal tool to drive the attainment of development and climate change related goals stipulated in the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
