"International Girls in ICT Day" on 28 April 2016, 28.4.2016
On the day celebrated on the 4th Thursday in April HAKOM continues with the activities in order to raise awareness among the girls regarding the successful career and other opportunities in the ICT sector. The project with the planned activities for the whole year has been launched by HAKOM in cooperation with the partners in the project; companies Ericsson Nikola Tesla and IBM Croatia and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing in Zagreb. The central event is planned for 28 April 2016 on the day of its celebration worldwide. By supporting this initiative HAKOM sees an opportunity for uniting all the factors in Croatia promoting these and similar initiatives related to the ICT and STEM occupations.
According to the numerous studies only the primary education is the key in determining the future course of education, and by promoting the ICT occupations we would like to encourage and direct the children at an early age, especially the girls from the pre-schools and primary schools to develop the ICT skills by raising their technical confidence and competence with the ultimate goal to choose their profession and employment in the ICT sector.
Constantly surrounded by a number of prejudices and stereotypes whether related to gender identity, age, sexual orientation or the selected study, young girls and women in Croatia and from around the world direct their personal interest in the occupations which do not include the ICT sector. Encouraged by the above mentioned fact we would like to contribute to the change of perception by promoting the importance of equal participation of women in the ICT sector and by encouraging the activities aimed at the employment of higher number of women in the propulsive sectors of the Croatian economy.
