Evolving with technology for 160 years

We marked our 160th anniversary with a look back at ITU’s long-standing role in fostering international cooperation and expanding global connectivity.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day on 17 May – commemorating ITU’s founding in 1865 – featured a compelling lightshow projected onto our iconic ITU Tower. We also heard insightful guest remarks by astronaut Claude Nicollier, round-the-world solo sailor Alan Roura, United Nations Office at Geneva Director-General Tatiana Valovaya, and the International Representation Director at Saudi Arabia’s Communications Space and Technology Commission Shahad AlBalawi.

A newly formed steering committee outlined the next steps for our AI Skills Coalition to expand accessible AI training worldwide.
